FrontRunners: Aquatic Culture

Jill Newman

Mikimoto (888.701.2323, www.mikimoto.com), the original and most celebrated producer of cultured pearls, has unveiled a limited edition collection of animal brooches ($17,000 to $48,000) adorned with its rarest South Sea specimens, some of which have been stashed away in a safe for more than a decade. “We set aside some of the most exotic pearls for couture pieces,” says the collection’s designer, Amy Kim-Araneo, who styled each piece to represent a specific marine animal. The curvaceous sapphire-and-diamond sea horse includes an unusual teardrop-shaped black South Sea pearl; a pair of penguins is depicted with two golden keishi pearls set in 18-karat gold accented with diamonds.
