FrontRunners: Architectural Landmark

Domus has occupied the front ranks of the world’s architecture and design journals since its founding by Milanese architect Gio Ponti in 1928. In December, the German publisher Taschen (www.taschen.com) will release a 12-volume, 6,960-page set (priced at $600) that contains the Italian journal’s best articles accompanied by English translations. Introductory texts will discuss the design and architecture of periods from Art Deco to pop to late modernism. . . .One article that will not be found in the pages of Domus, one expects, is a learned survey of luxury doghouses, though such residences do exist. Doggie Mansions (www.doggiemansions.com), a Palm Beach, Fla., company that offers doghouses priced from $10,500, plans to design and build bespoke models costing $100,000 or more. A team that includes an interior designer and a master builder will work with customers to produce a living space with sufficient treats to stop the most demanding of tenants from baying at the moon. The choice of exterior styling ranges from Key West cottage to Mediterranean estate, with design elements that may include honed-granite floors and imported Italian wall tiles. When a pet tires of watching reruns of Lassie on a Sony plasma TV, it can refresh itself in a detached 4-by-8-foot swimming pool. . . .
