FrontRunners: Art Appreciation

These days, a good number of interior designers are taking cues from French Art Deco pieces of the 1920s and ’30s—including those of Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Paul Dupré-Lafon. At the height of their careers in Paris, Dupré-Lafon displayed a talent for decorating hotels, while Ruhlmann drew praise for his elegant furniture made with exotic woods. Extraordinary pieces by both designers will be on exhibit during Paris’ Biennale des Antiquaires (www.biennaledesantiquaires.com). The art and antiques fair, to take place September 15 through 24, will return to its original home, the Grand Palais, after an absence of 14 years. . .

Shrubland Hall of Suffolk, England, has been placed on the market, and beginning September 19 its entire contents will be auctioned. Built in the 1770s, the hall has been held for more than two centuries by the de Saumarez family, which has contributed several admirals and vice admirals to the British navy. The sixth baron of Saumarez had converted the building into a health clinic and spa, but the facility closed on April 2. The hall contains some astounding artwork and furnishings, including a painting of the Madonna and child by Bernardino Luini and a circa 1790 George III cabinet. Sotheby’s (www.sothebys.com), which is conducting the auction, expects to bring in more than $3.7 million; the hall and surrounding estate are priced at about $42 million. . .
