FrontRunners: Cruising The Kimberley

Guests aboard orion, a new 106-passenger ship operated by Orion Expedition Cruises (+61.2.9033.8700, www.orioncruises.com.au), will enjoy an in-depth look at an out-of-the-way land during the vessel’s first voyage to the Kimberley in northwestern Australia. The Kimberley encompasses nearly 140,000 square miles of sparsely populated plateaus, rain forests, and steep-walled canyons, and the inaugural cruise to the region, scheduled for May 28 to June 8, will follow the jagged Indian Ocean coast between the towns of Darwin and Broome. Ports of call will range from St. George’s Basin, home to one of the country’s finest collections of Aboriginal paintings, to Broome’s Gantheaume Point, where low tide lays bare 120-million-year-old dinosaur footprints. For passengers on the cruise ship, Orion’s observation lounge, outdoor dining deck, and 53 staterooms and suites—each an exterior unit with windows or sliding glass doors—will ensure that the Kimberley remains constantly within view.
