FrontRunners: Evolutionary Journey

  • Scott Goetz

More than 70 years after its first trip from Adelaide to Alice Springs, Great Southern Railway’s Legendary Ghan train (+61.8.8213.4592, www.trainways.com.au) finally fulfills the role for which it was originally intended: making the cross-country journey to Darwin in Australia’s tropical north. The three-day excursion between the two capitals traverses more than 1,800 miles through the heart of the country, stopping at sites such as Alice Springs’ Desert Park in the foothills of the MacDonnell Ranges and Katherine Gorge, a 25-million-year-old sandstone canyon. Passengers dine in the train’s Gold Kangaroo restaurant cars and may reside in accommodations that include the Prince of Wales Carriage, a five-bedroom car that was built in 1919 for Edward’s visit to Australia. The carriage’s Victorian Lounge presents an appropriately regal setting for sampling South Australian vintages and watching the landscape transform from stark ochre desert to lush green countryside.
