FrontRunners: Golf Stream

  • Mike Nolan

Claiming more golf courses per square mile than any other place on earth, Bermuda has no need (or space) for an additional layout. Roger Rulewich, former chief designer for Robert Trent Jones, has delivered the next best thing with the Tucker’s Point Club (441.298.6915, www.tuckerspoint.com), a thorough redesign of the old Castle Harbour course.

Set in the hills above the mansions of Tucker’s Town, Rulewich’s course provides golfers of all levels a challenging yet fair round. Vistas of Castle Harbour and Harrington Sound remain visible from the still-elevated tees, but Rulewich has filled in the deeper valleys to assuage approaches and eliminate blind shots. Although the slanted fairways, which formerly resembled a fun-house floor, have been flattened, they continue to yield many a hillside lie. Greens feature TifEagle, a new Bermuda-grass hybrid that makes for quick but true putting surfaces.

Tucker’s Point is a private course, and a membership, for anyone who is able to obtain one, costs $85,000. However, concierges at any of Bermuda’s finer hotels likely can help secure a tee time, and Tucker’s Point plans to build its own hotel (guests of which would have access to the course) by 2007.
