FrontRunners: Ice for the Ages

  • Laurie Kahle

The custom of offering a diamond ring at betrothal dates to 15th-century Europe, and just as the nature of love and marriage has evolved over the centuries, so, too, have diamond jewels. What better time to celebrate the diamond’s historical role in romance than on Valentine’s Day? And what better place than in Las Vegas, destination of countless elopers? From February 14 through 23, at the new Ritz-Carlton, Lake Las Vegas hotel, the Diamond Information Center (which conducts public relations on behalf of De Beers Group) will present Diamonds & the Power of Love (212.210.7022, www.adiamondisforever.com), an international exhibit showcasing diamond jewelry designs ranging from historical engagement rings (both authentic and replica) to contemporary one-of-a-kind pieces from 11 esteemed jewelry houses including Bulgari, Chaumet, Fred, Graff, and Van Cleef & Arpels. Nearly 700 carats of shimmering diamonds valued at approximately $10 million will make an engaging display for hopeless romantics of all ages.
