FrontRunners: Love Letters

Laurie Kahle

Although he became a legend for his amorous proclivities, Casanova was also a renowned adventurer and writer who authored epic memoirs depicting his exploits in 18th-century Venice. Last year, Italian artisan penmaker Omas (800.321.4832, www.omas.com) paid homage to the Venetian Republic with three special collections, the third of which honors Casanova. Created in partnership with Ginori Co. President Richard Ginori, whose business specializes in porcelain and majolica, the limited edition porcelain and 18-karat-gold Casanova ($4,695) commemorates a time of sophistication and seduction, says Gianluca Malaguti Simoni, Omas’ artistic designer and grandson of the company’s founder. “[It was a] time when malicious smiles hidden by perfumed fans and eloquent glances gave way to rendezvous, preludes, amorous encounters, and whispers between powdered wigs.” Fittingly, a cupid adorns the 18-karat nib of this oversize fountain pen, and a cameo depicting the pen’s namesake decorates the upper part of the cap. What better inspiration could there be for penning that very special valentine?
