FrontRunners: Mighty Oak

  • Laurie Kahle

After years spent enhancing Krug Champagne, the winemaker’s French oak casks were ripe for retirement. But Krug and Italian penmaker Omas (www.omas.com, 866.273.3469) have put the casks back to work as design elements in a collection of Krug by Omas pens. The series’ 1,000 fountain pens ($990) feature barrels made from mature oak culled from Krug casks (representing the first fermentations of all of the house’s Champagnes from 1969 through 2002) and adorned with sterling silver finishings. For Omas President Eric Aliamus, the pens are “a reminder of this magnificent oak, modeled year after year by stupendous Krug vintages,” he says. “It undoubtedly deserved another life.”
