FrontRunners: Muscle-Bound Magnum

After their successful fortification of the Chrysler 300C, the Street and Racing Technology (SRT) engineers at DaimlerChrysler shifted their focus to the Dodge Magnum station wagon (www.dodge.com). The brawny product of their invention, the 2006 Magnum SRT8 ($38,000), features enlarged bores that help raise the Hemi engine’s capacity to 6.1 liters and horsepower to 425. Even at 4,260 pounds, the wagon blasts from zero to 60 mph in the low-5-second range. Large Brembo brakes bring this behemoth to a halt, at which its 20-inch aluminum wheels, rear spoiler, and low-profile styling are best admired. While it serves practical purposes with 71.6 cu ft of cargo space, the Magnum SRT8 certainly is not your mother’s station wagon—but I would not mind if it were my children’s.
