FrontRunners: One and Ole

Samantha Brooks

Ole Henriksen’s botanical fragrances waft through low-ceilinged hallways and nautically themed treatment rooms at the Shutters One spa (310.458.0030, www.shuttersonthebeach.com) in Santa Monica, Calif. The Los Angeles–based, Danish-born skin-care specialist designed all of the treatments and oversees operations at the new facility, which opened at the beachfront Shutters hotel earlier this year. “For me, to implement a spa and my customized treatments at such a beautiful facility has been like a dream come true,” says Henriksen, whose signature Nature Baby body treatment includes lemongrass exfoliation, a warm honey foil wrap, and cucumber-milk moisturizing, along with a Vichy shower and a Swedish massage.

The first spa for California-based interior designer Michael Smith, One retains Shutters’ original New England beach house–style charm with dark wood floors and porthole-shaped windows in the six treatment rooms. Smith also has been commissioned to update each of the hotel’s guest rooms, a project scheduled for completion by April 2005.
