FrontRunners: Select Smoke

Las Vegas may or may not be an ironically named city, for in Spanish, vegas means “fertile valley.” However, 5 Vegas is without question an appropriately titled cigar brand, as the tobaccos spring from the rich fields of several Central and South American nations. Each year the company produces a small batch of cigars in its 5 Vegas Limitada line, changing the blend each time. Its latest effort combines well-aged tobaccos—an Ecuadoran Sumatra wrapper from 2000, a Dominican binder from 2002, and Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and Dominican fillers from 2001—into one of the most exciting cigars of the past year. At first the peppery kick of the filler jousts with the refined taste of the wrapper, but after the initial inch or so, the Limitada mellows into a smooth, interesting smoke.
