FrontRunners: Select Smoke

Every year since 2001, Avo Cigars founder Avo Uvezian has

celebrated his birthday by creating a limited-edition smoke. This year’s

creation—in recognition of his 81st birthday—is the 55/8 x 48 Avo Limited Edition 07. The company will make only 7,000

boxes of 20, and it will ship only 4,000 of these to the United States. For his

limited-edition cigars, Uvezian prefers a wrapper grown in Ecuador’s cloudy

climate, which produces tobacco that tastes similar to shade-grown wrappers but

has a more intense flavor. In the Avo L.E. 07, this wrapper sheathes binder and

filler leaves from the Dominican Republic, creating a blend significantly

lighter than that of last year’s version. The cigar begins with a tangy bite but

quickly settles into a wonderfully well-rounded, smooth, medium-bodied smoke.

Measuring only 1/8 inch thick, 2 inches long, and

11/2 inches wide, the Prometheus C cigar cutter is slim and small

enough to slide into your wallet, so that you always can have a cutter at the

ready. The cutter’s stainless steel, guillotine-type blade ensures a smooth

slice. Two models are available: the 01 shown here, with a V-shaped pull, and

the 02, which has a rounded pull. ($70) www.prometheuskkp.com
