FrontRunners: Sensual Feeling

Spas continue to meld East and West in pleasing ways. The Beau-Rivage Palace (www.brp.ch) in Lausanne, Switzerland, one of Europe’s grande dame gems, now houses a spa operated by Cinq Mondes of Paris. The menu of therapies and beauty rituals draws from Japanese, Ayurvedic, North African, Taoist, and Balinese traditions. The Siam Sojourn combines a Japanese bath infused with aromatherapy oils and flowers with an exfoliating body scrub followed by Balinese and Thai massages.

The Peninsula Beverly Hills (www.peninsula.com) has gutted its 1980s-era spa and built a new one that marries Western styles and treatments with ones that recall the hotel’s Hong Kong origins. The redesigned spa, which features African cork flooring, Calacatta marble, and wall coverings with 19th-century French motifs, has responded to an increased number of male visitors with body, hand, and foot treatments designed specifically for men, including sports therapies and facials. The menu also includes massages with gem oils.

New York’s Hotel Gansevoort (www.hotelgansevoort.com) has made a splash with its rooftop swimming pool and adjoining penthouse bar, and now the hotel has taken its pool concept to the basement with G Spa and Lounge, which serves as a spa by day only. When night falls, the area transforms into a lounge, where the spa’s three infinity hydrotherapy pools add atmosphere to the grottolike bar, and the treatment rooms serve as VIP cabanas.
