FrontRunners: Song And Dance

James D. Malcolmson

For those who believe that a minute repeater is too subtle a complication for a timepiece, Swiss watchmaker de Grisogono (866.334.7476, www.degrisogono.com) has created one that performs for the eyes as well as the ears. Activate the slide on the new Occhio Ripetizione Minuti ($310,000), and the dial opens like a 12-bladed reflex camera shutter to reveal the movement as it chimes the hours, quarters, and minutes. The watch’s case design is characteristically bold, but the retractable diaphragm mechanism in the dial lends a surprising element of delicacy. The visual effect is enhanced by the Occhio’s rich sound, which is attributable to a three-gong movement built by repeater expert Christophe Claret. Occhio may put on a brash front, but it beats with a tender heart.
