FrontRunners: Spanish Olives

  • Laurie Kahle

Carrera Y Carrera’s Mediterranean roots run deep. Founded in 1885, the Madrid jewelry house is a master of old-world craftsmanship, yet it strives for a contemporary aesthetic with its sculptural, nature-inspired designs. “We launch and redefine products that maintain traditional values but also incorporate new trends in fashion and lifestyles around the world,” says chief executive Maria Eugenia Giron.

Each year, the house selects a theme for its collection. In addition to jewelry, last year’s Olive collection incorporated an array of decorative objects made of stone and precious metals accented with varying shades of marble olives. The latest evolution of the collection replaces the stone with olive wood, making the pieces more lightweight and functional for everyday use. “People want beautiful art pieces and also functional objects,” explains Giron. “Our ambition was to reconcile the two.”

Each vase, bowl, tray, and candlestick in the Olive collection is unique, as dictated by the characteristics of the wood. The rustic yet refined, numbered pieces are available at select Neiman Marcus stores and at Carrera y Carrera stores (800.CYC.8229) throughout Europe, Japan, and Beverly Hills.
