FrontRunners: Straight Shooter

The Editors

Like its Wally Yachts predecessors, the new WallyPower 70 Lau Lau (www.wally.com) features vast expanses of glass and the angular lines of a stealth bomber. As the founder of the Monaco-based boatbuilder explains, a cause-and-effect relationship exists between these two design hallmarks of Wally’s. "We use straight lines in our boats for good reason," says Luca Bassani. "It’s very difficult to curve glass." Compared to the original 70, which Wally released in 2005, the $5 million Lau Lau has a lower, sleeker superstructure and a more navigable deck layout. A WallyPower 90 will arrive next year, and a 125-footer is scheduled for 2010. German Frers, the Argentinean designer of raceboats and superyachts, has created a line of luggage especially for boaters. Working with the Italian leather-goods house Valextra (www.valextra.it), German Frers has designed a soft, waterproof trunk ($4,790 for a 26-by-11-inch version, $3,480 for a 21-by-10-inch one) that folds completely flat, helping to conserve space on a boat. In addition, a zipper system allows you to separate the bag’s compartments into individual cases. Frers also has fashioned a garment bag ($2,950) that allows you to remove and replace clothes while the bag is hanging in a closet.
