FrontRunners: Suite Spot

Visitors to Amsterdam can experience the Old World—the centuries-old canals, the Royal Palace, the van Gogh Museum—but retire to entirely up-to-date accommodations at the Hotel Okura (www.okura.nl). The 315-room hotel recently debuted the Suite, a 5,390-square-foot, butler-tended space with silk-covered walls and marble floors that spans the 17th and 18th floors. It is the largest and most luxurious suite in Benelux, according to the hotel, which spent nearly $3 million over two years to complete it. The $13,000-per-night dwelling provides panoramic views of the city from most rooms, including the lavishly appointed lounges located just off the atrium. Flat-screen televisions are plentiful throughout the space, though perhaps unnecessary: The Suite’s private theater features an 84-inch screen and seating for as many as 12. . . . When Michael Taylor designed the restaurant Auberge du Soleil (www.aubergedusoleil.com) in 1981 and the hotel in 1986, he helped trigger the transformation of Napa Valley into one of California’s premier resort destinations. Recently, in celebration of its 25th anniversary, the property commissioned Suzanne Tucker to renovate the restaurant and rooms. The highlights of the renovation are two 1,800-square-foot maisons named Champagne and Loire. Champagne has two bedrooms, while Loire features one bedroom and a fitness studio. Each includes a large master bedroom with a fireplace and sitting area, a living room with a fireplace and dining alcove, and a terrace with a hot tub and views of Napa Valley. Rates for a maison range from $2,800 to $3,500.
