FrontRunners: Valley High

San Franciscans no longer have to forsake fine sushi during their weekend trips to wine country. Go Fish (www.gofishrestaurant.net) opened in St. Helena last September as the first serious sushi establishment in Napa Valley. The 160-seat restaurant sources fish for its raw, grilled, poached, and sautéed specialties from as far away as Asia and Europe. Set as it is in St. Helena, Go Fish also features more than 200 wine selections. A select group of Napa wines will go on the block June 9 at the Napa Valley Vintners Association’s 27th annual Auction Napa Valley (www.napavintners.com). The sale, held at Meadowood Napa Valley, is part of a four-day event consisting of receptions, tours, and tastings. Last year’s auction raised $8.4 million for local charities, including more than $1 million paid for a single lot from Staglin Family Vineyard. Vintners and gentlemen farmers will feel right at home at the Orchard at the Carneros Inn (www.theorchardatcarneros.com), a collection of 17 fractional-ownership cottages in Napa’s Carneros district. The residences, which opened this spring, further the idealized Midwestern-town ambience of the Carneros Inn resort, which includes 86 tin-roofed guest cabins and a Town Square with boccie ball courts. Shares of the 1,700-square-foot, two-bedroom cottages begin at about $300,000. Those interested in both fine wine and offbeat architecture will appreciate a visit to the Quixote Winery (www.quixotewinery.com) in Napa’s Stags Leap district. The facility, which opened to the public in February, is the only building in the United States designed by the late Austrian architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser, whose flourishes at Quixote include golden turrets and a rooftop garden planted with trees. Also out of the ordinary is Quixote’s flagship wine, which, in a district known for Cabernet Sauvignon, is a fragrant and fruity Petite Syrah.
