Mandarin Oriental New York
Some five-star hotels enlist famous designers to create over-the-top accommodations, but the Mandarin Oriental New York took a different approach when it fashioned the $8,500-per-night Taipan Suite two summers ago. "We wanted to create a residential feel," says Kristen Ruble, vice president of consumer marketing for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group. "So instead of going outside for a designer, we designed the suite ourselves."

Headed by Ruble, the Taipan’s design team included hotel staff members from the accounting, marketing, and IT departments. Since the Mandarin Oriental’s general manager, Rudy Tauscher, is by way of avocation an artist, the Taipan Suite’s designers asked him to create a painting for the space. "We all had different fields of expertise," says Ruble. "Some people knew about windows, others knew furniture."

Ruble planned from the outset to make the view the star of the suite. As a result, the 54th-floor living room showcases panoramas of Central Park, the Hudson River, and the Manhattan skyline. "We kept the windows simple to get a full view of the Hudson River and admit more light and air," she says.

As for the general manager’s painting, it is displayed in the suite’s living room.
