Grand Openings: Wynn Streak

Jennifer Hall

Before Steve Wynn opened Encore in December, interior designer Roger Thomas described the resort as "Wynn Las Vegas’ little sister who went to Macao and came back to Las Vegas a little more grown-up." It was, in fact, Thomas who went back and forth to China while designing interiors for a Wynn-owned resort in Macao. His latest effort on the Strip confirms that, for their encore, both he and Steve Wynn intended to keep it in the family.

Encore’s bronze tower is taller than Wynn Las Vegas’, but is otherwise nearly identical. The new resort has 2,034 rooms (682 fewer than Wynn), five restaurants, and all the requisite amenities (pools, casinos, nightclubs). At the Botero steak house, a fertility goddess sculpted by Colombian artist Fernando Botero reclines in the center of the dining room, and flagons full of colorful cocktails grace the ceiling above the bar (shown). Three human-sized golden pears and a 27-foot-long crystal dragon decorate the pan-Asian Wazuzu restaurant.

Thomas’ affinity for loud colors and Wynn’s penchant for fine art are evident throughout Encore’s interiors, as they are at Wynn Las Vegas. And as at Wynn, the family formula works.
