A Breath of Fresh Air in the Kitchen

  • Christina Garofalo

Industrial designer Robert Brunner has partnered with Zephyr, which makes kitchen ranges, to produce a series of sleek and stylish ventilation hoods. Known for his high-tech design style, Brunner, whose company is Ammunition design group, created a series of 10 geometric models ($2,000 to $5,000, depending on installation requirements) accented with dual halogen lights. The ranges are remote-control operated from up to 15 feet away and can be programmed to expel air automatically every four hours.

Brunner’s favorite piece is the Horizon, which he says marks a great accomplishment in engineering: the hood skims the kitchen wall and then makes a tight upward curve. The Horizon comes in stainless steel or red, black, or white glass that can be etched in a leaf or flower design (about $3,200). Another model, the Tilt, is named for its six panels angled on the wall in canopy-like form, available in plain stainless steel or with a black powder coating (about $2,900).
