Catalan Art Rugs Underfoot

  • Jorge Arango

To celebrate its 25-year anniversary, the innovative Barcelona-based rug company nanimarquina is releasing the Chillida Collection, a range of seven handmade rugs based on works of art by the famous Catalan sculptor Eduardo Chillida, who died in 2002. All are made of hand-spun, hand-dyed yarns and have a much higher density of knots than most rugs. The selection includes wool and blends of wool and silk or mohair. Some are based on the artist’s drawings and paintings (black and white, hand-woven and knotted), others on his sculptures (interpreted in two different pile heights and completely white). Erwan and Ronan Bouroullec also introduced a new design with the company—irregularly shaped, more rustic kilim-style rugs with double binding. It takes 200 days to make each of these, so the company keeps a limited stock. Prices for the Chillida Collection range from $3,750 (5.8 by 7.9 feet) to $12,500 (8.2 by 9 feet).
