Exquisite Beaded Furniture from Mexico

The latest venture for Sami Hayek, brother of Salma and owner/designer of the company Espacio, is the Mestizo Collection, a highly original line of furniture that combines lacquer and wood with the distinctive beading of the Huichol Indians of Mexico. The collection highlights the various artisanal crafts of the country (there are also black pottery pieces and mirrors). Instead of the Huichol’s usual plastic beads, however, Hayek is using glass beads from the Czech Republic. Incredibly labor-intensive, a mirror might incorporate 200,000 hand-set beads. The line elevates a distinctly ethnic look to high art, and absolutely every aspect—color, design, proportions—is completely customizable. A rosewood cabinet with beading detail is $15,000; a coffee table with a charcoal mirror glass top and stainless interior is $10,000; and a credenza is $24,000.
