Fire & Water: Yen for Zen

Adele Cygelman

A bathroom can be a sanctuary, but it can still be dynamic," says Bruce T. Linthicum, design director/residential of Marc-Michaels Interior Design. The Florida firm was called to Pennsyl-vania for a client who is a practicing Buddhist and who is establishing wellness centers across the country that integrate Eastern and Western medical practices and holistic healing.

Set on 68 acres near Scranton, the home is so secluded that privacy, especially in the spacious master bath, was never an issue. Four large windows by the shower overlook an outdoor spa, a labyrinth, and manicured hiking trails.

The principles of Zen and feng shui figure prominently in the design and color selection. Large slabs of pale green Persian onyx ("the color of virgin olive oil that you can only find in Italy," says Linthicum) with gold and purple veins were brought in and fitted for the bathroom floor, tub surround, shower walls and ceiling, and vanity surround. Complementing the green are horizontal bands of purple glass tile. "Purple in feng shui is a very strong, positive color," Linthicum notes. The shower floor and the room’s barrel-vaulted ceiling were covered entirely in glass mosaic tile. At night, cove lighting makes the tile look iridescent.

The 4-by-14-foot open shower has two giant rainhead showerheads, body sprays, wall washes, and massages. A massive stone slab found on the property was placed next to the whirlpool tub. The whole floor has radiant heat.

"The bathroom is his hideout, where he spends a lot of time," Linthicum says. "It’s both dramatic and serene. After all, you can be meditating at the top of the Himalayas and, when you open your eyes, feel incredibly exhilarated."
