Gilt Lighting

Jorge Arango

Some of the lighting designs of the Lombardy-based manufacturer Catellani & Smith have been available piecemeal in this country through various exclusive galleries for the past few years. But the Italian firm’s newest collections are just being converted to American wiring and are now more widely available in the United States. Designer Enzo Catellani’s sculptural works are diverse: some are masses of hand-bent silver or gold wire embedded with light, others are gold- and silver-leafed disks, or enormous domes whose insides are also metal-leafed. They are contemporary, but the forms are simple enough to adapt to other styles of interiors. Ovalo, one of those hand-bent gold-leaf wire masses, is new (it’s an oval version of a design that was originally round). Prices run from about $1,500 for a sconce or table lamp to $15,000 for more elaborate chandeliers. All can be customized (ovals can be spheres and made in any size; the disks can number anywhere from two to five, though for the right price anything more is possible). (www.catellanismith.com)
