New Designs on Nature

Jorge Arango

French designer Hervé van der Straeten, known for exceptionally crafted nature-inspired furniture, accessories, and jewelry, has just released several new bronze designs that will be represented exclusively in the U.S. by New York art deco dealer Maison Gerard. One of them, a lantern with crystal pendant detail ($21,000-$24,000), may look familiar. It was originally introduced in 2006, but Van der Straeten has continued to tweak its form and now offers it in three new sizes. The bamboo-patterned Lingot sconce ($8,500) channels the designer’s plant motifs through a more stylized, modern idiom. And an oval patinated bronze coupe ($3,500) resembles a gigantic pod from a tropical rainforest. “As the historical material has become scarcer and harder to find,” said the gallery’s founder Gerard Widdershoven, “we began to look at work by contemporary designers that would complement the art deco collection, and Hervé’s work is of such an extraordinary high quality in terms of the design, execution, and finish. We feel that Hervé’s pieces will continue to be collectible in the future.” (212.674.7611, www.maisongerard.com)
