The Ultimate Reincarnated Victorian Desk

  • Jorge Arango

In 2008, when the hammer fell at Sotheby’s London on an elaborate 1880s parcel gilt partner’s desk, the price was almost 50,000 pounds (about $82,000). Those who missed out on the bidding and lost their chance to own this elegant antique now have access to an exact replica, being produced in a limited edition of 50 by the U.K.-based firm Jonathan Charles. Made with inlaid satinwood veneers, its inverted bow-front form is embellished with a hand-carved gilded ribbon edge and a leather writing surface. Its drawers have cedar wood interiors, and there are two secret compartments that pop up from that surface. The decorative hardware is all hand-cast in England. It retails for about $41,000.
