“Sleeping in the master bedroom makes you feel like you’re in Palm Beach or Old Havana,” says Tom Riley of the Thomas Riley Artisans’ Guild. “The distressed beams in the ceiling give the room a character and age that you just don’t see anymore.” The Artisans’ Guild, which specializes in fine handcrafted woodwork, was responsible for all the drafting and engineering that went into the clients’ Naples, Fla., home. “It was quite a move for them,” explains Riley. “They went from a condo in a high-rise to a large, spread-out, single-family residence.”

The homeowners’ request for a combination of Addison Mizner’s Spanish Colonial interiors mixed with a jolt of old Cuba was the inspiration for the traditional tongue-and-groove Spanish cedar ceiling, a labor-intensive undertaking that required several craftsmen to master the art of distressing the wood and fitting the beams together. The walls’ subtle, smooth texture results from a five-step process that involved applying pigmented plaster and marble dust that were then burnished and waxed to a porcelainlike finish. The tropical atmosphere is completed with Donghia sofa upholstery and bed fabrics, a Ralph Lauren bed and chairs, and a handmade Karges chest fitted into a corner niche. “The owners are very casual people,” says Riley. “They were very satisfied with the amount of open space and the relaxed mood that came from the textures we created.”
