Icons & Innovations: Abercrombie & Kent: Around The World With A&K

  • Scott Goetz

Abercrombie & Kent’s escorted tours range from a four-day ski excursion in the Canadian Rockies to a weeks-long private jet journey that circumnavigates South America, but nearly all consist of small groups led by expert local guides. Among A&K’s offerings for 2006 are the following trips, most of which occur a few times throughout the year.

Europe and the Mediterranean by Private Jet
A custom-reconfigured Boeing 757 transports your party to London, Istanbul, Dubrovnik, Petra, Venice, and other European, African, and Middle Eastern cities on this one-time, 23-day tour (April 17 through May 9). Scheduled activities include a tour of Sicily’s Borghese Gardens with Princess Borghese, dinner with Venetian art scholars, and a concert by the Sofia Boys’ Choir in Bulgaria’s capital. ($45,900)

Classic Antarctica Aboard Explorer II
On the small cruise ship Explorer II, you depart from Ushuaia in Argentina’s Tierra del Fuego region for a two-week trip to the South Shetlands, Deception Island, Paradise Bay, Lemaire Channel, and Drake Passage. During the trip, naturalists lecture on Antarctica’s wildlife, and you can board Zodiacs to view penguin nesting grounds. (From $6,545)

The Desert Road: Libya and Egypt
A new offering for 2006, the 13-day Desert Road trip follows the trade routes that linked Roman outposts in Libya with Alexandria and Siwa Oasis in Egypt. The tour includes a walk through the preserved Roman city of Leptis Magna; a traditional Libyan dinner with a family in Tripoli; a stay at Siwa’s Adrere Amellal hotel, which is modeled after an ancient Berber village; and visits to Cleopatra’s baths and the burial site of Alexander the Great. (From $6,995)

Heli-Explorations in the Canadian Rockies
Also new for 2006, these journeys based at the 10-room Valemount Lodge consist of helicopter flights to the most remote regions of Banff National Park, where guides lead you on hiking, fly-fishing, and white-water rafting adventures. Through its Travel Light option, A&K provides all the necessary equipment for your daily excursions. (From $4,950)

Wonders of Australia and New Zealand
This 19-day tour utilizes charter and commercial flights to cover terrain from Australia’s Outback to Queenstown, New Zealand. The trip begins with two days in Melbourne, followed by a charter flight to a private island on the Great Barrier Reef. After three nights at the Lizard Island Resort, followed by an overnight trip to Ayers Rock, you head to the Four Seasons Sydney and enjoy a private tour of the city’s opera house. Activities in Queenstown include a helicopter excursion over Milford Sound. (From $13,930)

Essence of India
The cities of India’s Mughal North are the focus of this 17-day trip that stops in Jaipur, Agra, Delhi, Jodhpur, Mumbai, and Udaipur. Tour highlights include a sunset stroll through the Taj Mahal, a private viewing of the maharaja’s Crystal Gallery in Udaipur, and stays at Oberoi hotels. (From $9,485)

East Africa in Style
Covering Tanzania and Kenya, the original home of A&K, this safari features visits to East Africa’s finest game lodges: Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Grumeti River Camp, and Bateleur Camp. Flights between the resorts maximize the amount of time spent viewing the Big Five of African wildlife. Activities include a hot-air balloon ride over the Masai Mara. (From $10,570)
