As the Year of the Snake kicks off with Chinese New Year festivities, Bulgari is paying homage to its own glittering snake designs, which span more than 70 years. The Italian luxury house has unveiled an exhibition at its Fifth Avenue flagship store, called Bulgari: Serpenti Collection that will be on display through March 6 and will then travel to other locations around the world. The gilded snake has been a familiar symbol at Bulgari, expressed in elaborate jewelry, watches, and accessories. The exhibition presents the range of designs, including important archival pieces such as a 1940s gold snake watch and a 1960s snake bracelet in diamonds, emeralds, and gold. Also on display are glamorous portraits of fashion icons—Elizabeth Taylor, Marisa Berenson, and Veruschka—wrapped in Bulgari snake jewels, accessories, and timepieces. The retrospective offers a rare opportunity to view unique high-jewelry pieces and watches alongside historical materials from Bulgari’s archive. To commemorate the occasion, Assouline is publishing a book in March also called Bulgari: Serpenti Collection, written by the jewelry historian Marion Fasel, featuring jewelry, watches, images, and sketches that trace the history of the brand’s snake designs over the decades.
