FJ Hakimian Gallery Introduces Fan Motif Vintage Kilim Compositions
From the Robb Report Luxury Newswire
FJ Hakimian's Manhattan gallery has long been trusted resource for discerning interior designers, architects and collectors who go there in search of the finest and rarest antique and vintage carpets. Founder Joseph Hakimian is known for his discriminating taste and for globally sourcing extraordinary handmade carpets from 1750 to 1950. His fans are among the world's most elite and accomplished designers, art collectors, and architects and their celebrity clientele. To celebrate his illustrious fan-base on the occasion of the opening of his new Gallery space designed by the renowned architect John Ike of Ike, Kligerman Barkely Associates, Mr. Hakimian has launched a collection of new carpets handcrafted from vintage kilim panels.
Sewn by hand in Hakimian’s New York City atelier, these various compositions of fan shapes are inspired by and adapted from beautiful fan-motif documentary designs from the 1920s. The vintage circa 1940 kilim panels his artisans use to compose the rugs were handwoven by brides from nomadic regions of Turkey as a part of their dowry offerings. They were loomed using hand spun yarns that are variously hued in the natural colors of the pure, high-altitude sheep's wool from which they're made. These tones of ivory, cream, beige, warm grey, platinum and chocolate brown work synergistically in Hakimian's new Deco-inspired compositions, with the resulting carpets feeling both lively and neutral. Each vintage kilim piece is individually hand-cut and painstakingly stitched, then the reverse side of the composition is fully lined for outstanding endurance.
The combination of three distinct eras and two types of handcraft adds up to carpets that are timeless, enduring and perfect for almost any style of interior. FJ Hakimian Gallery is at 145 East 57th Street in Manhattan. Appointments are encouraged, and may be made by calling (212) 371-6900. More information on the collections is offered at fjhakimian.com.
