Out of Africa

San Francisco-based furniture designer Jiun Ho unveiled a collection of 15 pieces inspired by the “primitive, raw landscapes” of his recent travels in Botswana. The Baobab table, which earns its name from the striking indigenous African tree, is made from either walnut or rift-sawn oak that is heavily sandblasted to bring out the grains in the wood to resemble the trees. Although many of the 35-year-old designer’s collections have been motivated by his travels, it’s his Malaysian background that permeates his minimalist signature style.

“My intention is to balance the primitive feeling in textures I saw in Africa with an elegance of form and shape,” says Ho. Pieces in the collection can be custom designed with different finishes, fabrics, and woods, and each takes from 12 to 16 weeks to create and produce. Prices range from $5,500 up to $20,000 for the Savuti dining table, a rift-sawn oak table that expands to seat 10. Aside from this collection, Ho works with private clients in his San Francisco studio to create a range of custom-made furniture. (www.jiunho.com)
