FrontRunners: In Its Element
The cross-grained olive wood used in the Graf von Faber-Castell Elemento Collection (www.faber-castell.us) references Faber-Castell’s origins as a family-owned pencil manufacturer. In 1761 cabinetmaker Caspar Faber started a small business in Stein, Germany, outside Nuremberg. He made maybe 10 pencils per week and walked them into town to sell at market. Two hundred fifty years later, Caspar’s company continues—offering more than 2,000 products made in 14 factories worldwide. The limited-edition Elemento line is sold à la carte or as a $4,825 four-piece set comprising a fountain pen, roller ball, ballpoint, and mechanical pencil. Each numbered edition is fashioned from a single piece of wood that ranges in color from reddish brown to honey yellow to salmon pink.
