Mandarin Oriental, Paris

Lisa Abend

Squeezed in among Hermès, Lanvin, and Yves Saint Laurent storefronts, the Mandarin Oriental, Paris, made its debut on the narrow shopping street of rue Saint-Honoré in June. Though quite stylish itself, the hotel presents a comforting contrast to the crowded street outside.

Visible upon entry to the 1930s-era building, the Mandarin Oriental’s interior courtyard is a lush sanctuary planted with trees and flowering hedges. The hotel’s 138 accommodations are equally inviting, most notably the duplex Royal Oriental Suite (top), which can connect with the Suite Cabochon and Premier Atelier suites to form a three-bedroom penthouse.

In the entryway to the Royal Oriental, a commissioned work by artist Thierry Bisch depicts a cloud of butterflies. This motif extends to the spa, where mosaic floors decorated with butterflies and walls covered in three-dimensional flowers give way to a 46-foot pool encircled by seven treatment suites. The hotel’s culinary havens include chef Thierry Marx’s Sur Mesure restaurant and the Cake Shop, which offers jewel-like pastries to those not concerned with fitting into the latest Sonia Rykiel.
