FrontRunners: Prize Writer

Notwithstanding his fight-hyping poetry, Muhammad Ali gained more fame as a pugilist than as a writer. Yet he is unquestionably a momentous cultural figure and thus a fitting subject for the first of Montegrappa’s new Icon series of pens. The Tribute to Muhammad Ali (www.montegrappa.com) is trimmed in gold or silver, and its barrel and cap are finished with pearlescent white resin that evokes Ali’s boxing trunks. Like those trunks, the pen also has two black stripes running down its length. The pen, which displays Ali’s signature, has a starting price of $2,600. Diamonds encircling the crown of the cap distinguish the gold Knockout edition (from $22,000), which totals 37 pens—one for each of Ali’s career knockouts.
