Robb Design Portfolio: Precious Penmanship

The Editors

A rapidly growing coterie of fountain pen collectors has emerged within the past decade, and august manufacturers like Montblanc and Montegrappa have responded by issuing limited edition writing instruments to pique the personal interest of those so possessed. Elaborate examples of the pen maker’s art commemorate the lives of favorite writers, composers, and artists, as well as historical events and anniversaries. One pen even contains some molecules of DNA from the hair of Abraham Lincoln.

But the most treasured of all pens are those embellished with precious stones, and none is as opulent as this unique instrument cre-ated by Lee Siegelson. Formed entirely of solid 18-karat white gold, the entire body is encrusted with over 70 carats of invisibly set princess-cut diamonds and accented at either end with two octagonal-cut stones. Perfectly weighted to enhance the writing experience, this substantive pen was created over a period of two and one-half years in collaboration with Spectra Gems. The two firms’ mutual goal was to produce the single most impressive example of invisibly set diamonds extant. Nothing, it seems, succeeds like excess.

The Siegelson Pen is priced at $700,000 and is available exclusively from Gerson & Horowitz Diamonds (800.331.9331).
