Azimut applied similar design parameters from its 103S express yacht to the 72S, launched in November 2009, with good effect. Stefano Righini designed the exterior to have a flybridge that was spacious but unobtrusive, so the 72S’s lines still resemble a performance yacht. He also made sure that the salon fully opened onto the cockpit, creating a social space with fresh air but protected from extreme elements. The owner’s stateroom is also a full-beam affair, with picture windows designed into the hull sides. But instead of being a mini-me yacht, the 72S has several features that shine across its category. The joystick control steering on the flybridge lets the owner/captain control the boat with ease, even at 39 knots, and an opening in the carbon-fiber hardtop above the dining table allows sun to flood the salon. Remote-control venetian blinds and a galley by Boffi are the icing on a very fine piece of Italian cake.
