Mandarin Oriental, Prague

The 99-room Mandarin Oriental, Prague sits in the heart of the Czech city’s Malá Strana, or Little Quarter, on a slope that rises from the Vltava River to Prague Castle. The hotel, which occupies a 14th-century Dominican monastery, opened in September 2006 after a $67 million transformation by a team of architects, designers, and archaeologists. During the renovation, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a Gothic church, which is visible under the glass floor of the hotel’s spa. Accommodations Rooms and suites at the hotel feature large limestone bathrooms and parquet floors, and the presidential suite’s roof terrace affords views of the Malá Strana, the river, and the castle. Facilities The seven spa suites are located in the remains of a Renaissance-era church next door to the monastery building. Dining Barego offers aperitifs galore in a metropolitan atmosphere. Fine international fare, such as ravioli stuffed with lobster, water chestnuts and mascarpone, is served at Essensia. Worthy Diversion In the Jewish Quarter, guests can shop Parizska Street for Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Dunhill or tour Franz Kafka’s old stomping grounds. Rates Superior rooms start at about $370. The 1,613-square-foot Presidential Penthouse Suite offers a 50-inch plasma-screen TV, a Bang and Olfsen sound system, and a terrace for $5,475.
