Penha Longa Hotel and Golf Resort

In 2003, the Ritz-Carlton Co. completed a $25 million renovation of Penha Longa, a resort set at the heart of Sintra-Cascais Nature Park. A Robert Trent Jones Jr. course runs through cork, olive, and eucalyptus groves before climbing to a plateau with views of the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic shore. Accommodations All 194 guest rooms feature large terraces or balconies, many of which overlook the golf course. The resort’s Club Level includes 37 rooms and a private lounge with views of the property’s 16th-century church. Recreation Swimming pools, jogging tracks, a Six Senses spa in the resort’s palace complex, and two golf courses. Dining Portuguese specialties at AssaMassa, Japanese fare at Midori, and poolside Dining at Serra. Worthy Diversion Race a sports car on the Autódromo do Estoril, former home to the Portuguese Grand Prix. Rates From $460 to $4,200.
