Post Ranch Inn

Set on a high pass above the ocean in Big Sur, California, the Post Ranch Inn taps into the natural mysticism of its surroundings with weekly programs of yoga, stargazing, art tours, and nature walks. Five of the inn’s 30 Accommodations are recessed into the side of a ridge and have sloping roofs upholstered in native grass and wildflowers. Seven others (called tree houses) stand tiptoe on nine-foot-tall stilts, because a slab-concrete foundation would destroy the delicate tree roots below. Accommodations Forty 425-square-foot cabins, some on stilts, that afford commanding ocean and forest views. Recreation Listen to the drum of the resident shaman as he guides your journey into new energies and a fuller understanding of the self. Dining Nothing beats the vistas from Sierra Mar, but the restaurant’s cuisine, most of which is seasonal and organic, comes close. The wine list features nearly 4,000 selections. Worthy Diversion Head to the nearby Laguna Seca raceway to watch superbikes and sports cars compete on the twisting track. Rates Cabins from $550 to $1,485.
