Uma Paro

Set on a forested hill above the city, Uma Paro’s tiered roofs and intricate window treatments and woodwork mimic the ancient monastery Drukgyel Dzong. The resort appears to have been part of the Himalayan landscape for centuries, although Uma Paro opened its doors in 2004. Accommodations Twenty rooms and nine villas that incorporate carved wooden windows and other traditional furnishings into otherwise contemporary interiors. Recreation Hiking in the remote Haa Valley (overnight trips can be arranged) and weeklong spa retreats (including consultations with yoga teachers and alternative health practitioners). Dining At Uma Paro’s Bukhari restaurant, order the sicum paa, or dried local pork, with Bhutanese chili, and the bathup, a hearty noodle soup. Worthy Diversion Explore Bhutan’s Buddhist culture by visiting the oft-photographed Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) Monastery and attending the Paro Festival in April. Rates Superior rooms from $250, deluxe rooms from $340, one-bedroom villas from $750, and a two-bedroom villa from $1,000.
