Mochi Craft Long Range 23

Michael Verdon

Ferretti created its first expedition yacht, the new Mochi Craft Long Range 23 (+39.0543.474.411, www.mochicraft.com), with the environment in mind. The 78-foot explorer-style yacht features the first breakthrough in hybrid propulsion on a series yacht of this size, the Zero Emission Mode (ZEM) system, which provides five eco-friendly options that are controlled by a touchscreen panel on the helm station.

Emissions-reduction modes include Diesel Propulsion and Energy Storing, which gives the boat a top speed of 15 knots with twin 800-hp MAN diesels while recharging the vessel’s lithium batteries; Diesel-Electric mode, which shuts down the engines and uses the boat’s diesel generators and battery pack to deliver to the electric engines four hours of running power at six knots; and ZEM Propulsion (batteries only), which allows the yacht to maintain a speed of five knots for three hours.

The Long Range 23’s Ferretti Wave Efficient Yacht (FER.WEY) hull design also creates less resistance in the water, thereby reducing the amount of energy needed for propulsion. But do not think of the 23 as a maritime version of a Prius. In terms of quality and style, it has more in common with the Lexus RX Hybrid. Its spacious interior features finely crafted details in wood, and a layout that is both comfortable and inviting.
