Award-Winning Sport Horses Come to the States

Christina Garofalo

In its 30-year history, Blue Chip Farms—a world-class horse farm in New York’s Hudson Valley—has managed dozens of world-champion horses, including the famed jumping horse Sapphire, a winner of two Olympic gold medals and two editions of the Hamptons Horse Classic. Now the farm, which comprises more than 700 acres of rolling hills just 50 miles north of Manhattan, is extending its high-end racehorse business to breed and raise Olympic-level sport and jumping horses.

“Historically, the sport and jumping horse category has been dominated by the Europeans,” says Blue Chip’s owner, Thomas Grossman. “In order to buy a 6- to 8-year-old European warmblood horse, American clients have to fly to Belgium, Holland, or Germany, and then ship the horse back to the States. Savvy owners and breeders know they are getting the short end of the stick.”

With the new service, whose price varies based on the level of accommodation required, Blue Chip will offer complete mare management for breeding, boarding, and foaling, with the goal of raising generations of horses like Sapphire. The property features six barns with a total of 122 stalls and 18 sheds; each barn has its own 18- to 25-acre field. A staff of 35, the majority of whom live on-site and have at least 20 years’ experience at the farm, tend to the horses. Blue Chip is exploring an option for its top-tier clients to build homes on-site as well. (845.895.3930, www.bluechipfarms.com)
