The Best of the Best 2003: Resorts - Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows

Maryann Hammers

Like an oasis in paradise, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows occupies 3,200 acres on the Kona Kohala coastline. Surrounded by ancient spring-fed fishponds and black lava that last flowed in the 16th century, it offers stunning views of Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest mountain (when measured from its base 30,000 feet below sea level).

Built in 1983, the resort is renowned for its fabulous restaurants, miles of pristine shoreline, wide variety of water sports, and seaside golf courses. Now the resort has two additional reasons to visit: five new 4,000-square-foot bun-galows and a new spa.

Each bungalow includes the services of an around-the-clock butler and features steam showers, a whirlpool spa, and a private swimming pool. The spa, which replicates a Hawaiian village, offers lomi-lomi massages choreographed to Hawaiian music, a la’au (healing) garden with indigenous medicinal plants, a natural lava sauna, and hales (huts) with plunge pools and outdoor garden showers.
