The Best of the Best 2003: Undiscovered Bests - Dubey & Schaldenbrand

James D. Malcomson

Watches with flamboyant dials suggesting a distinct flavor of yesteryear have become so popular that they are as much the province of marketing directors as designers. But at Dubey & Schaldenbrand, the small company located in Les Ponts-de-Martel, Switzerland, evocative and fabulously detailed dial designs have always been an art form. Owner Cinette Robert’s passion for vintage timepieces contributes most to Dubey & Schaldenbrand’s impressive output. “I pore through books and older pieces, and then work with some very talented designers in the area,” she explains. Shimmering etched dials, striking numerals, and exquisite color schemes result, and the detailing carries to the inside of the watches, where many of the movements are hand-engraved. The production of most models is limited, giving added impetus to the growing number of collectors who are discovering Dubey & Schaldenbrand.
