The Best of the Best 2003: Watches - Glashütte Original

  • James D. Malcolmson

While Glashutte Original’s PanoReserve is definitely an eye-catcher, the real reason this model has been so exuberantly embraced by watch aficionados is that—as a perfect representation of the German watchmaking tradition—it is an unmatched value. The new PanoReserve ($7,150), with its manufacture movement, will tempt even those who believe fine watchmaking is the province of the Swiss alone.

With its characteristically offset hour ring, the crisply defined dial announces the PanoReserve as resolutely German. The quality of the timepiece, though, is world-class. The movement is finished as finely as anything from Switzerland, and perhaps more significantly, it is made entirely by Glashutte Original. “It’s one of the few companies that is creating, not copying,” says Al Armstrong of Armstrong Rockwell Fine Jewelry in Hartford, Conn. “They’re very proud that they make every screw in the watch. Pound for pound, where else are you going to find such value for an in-house calibre?”
