A Cycling Adventure Trip Down Mount Kilimanjaro

  • Christina Garofalo

Attention die-hard cyclists: Trek Travel, the Wisconsin-based company that organizes cycling vacations worldwide, is giving 20 people the chance to participate in the world’s first mountain bike trip down Mount Kilimanjaro. The ride is part of a 12-day humanitarian expedition, from February 22 to March 5, 2013, to bring clean water to Tanzanians.

The trip includes accommodations at three Tanzanian hotels and lodges—Mount Meru Hotel, Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge, and Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge—as well as meals, biking equipment, and activities. The trip begins with a climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, where Trek Travel will sponsor an environmental cleanup, and then participants will make a two-day bike ride down the mountain. But it won’t be all work: Participants will also go on a morning hot-air balloon ride over Serengeti National Park to watch the migration of wildebeests and zebras, followed by a Champagne breakfast; and they will meet some of the local Tanzanians who will receive clean water from the program. Ninety percent of the trip cost will be donated to a fund to help Tanzanians get water. Price options vary greatly (starting at $18,500) depending upon the activities.
