A Sky-High New Zealand Escape

Christina Garofalo

Hollyford Track is offering a unique opportunity to explore New Zealand’s Hollyford Valley and Milford Sound on its One-Day Guided Heli-Hike Adventure: a personal helicopter trip that transports travelers to major sites within the Fiordland region. The daylong journey begins in Queenstown, where a helicopter takes a group of two or more ($3,750 per person) for a private ride over alpine scenery. Upon landing, visitors walk through a forest to Lake Alabaster, cross one of the area’s longest swing bridges, and arrive at a riverside lodge for morning tea. From there, a boat ride takes them down the Hollyford River and Lake McKerrow, passing Fiordland’s two highest mountaintops—Mt. Tutoko and Mt. Madeline—followed by a walk through the 1,500-year-old rain forest, ending at the coastline. The helicopter then transports guests to lunch overlooking either the coast or the mountains before a flight along Milford Sound, for views atop the glacial plateau of Mt. Tutoko. Hollyford Track also offers a two-night, three-day trip to the same sites that incorporates walks and hikes throughout the valley, plus additional historic tours, for travelers looking for a longer getaway (about $1,700 per person).
