Best of the Best 2011: Spas: Six Senses Spa at Soneva Kiri

Talk about remote: Getting to the Six Senses Spa at Soneva Kiri (+66.3961.9800, www.sixsenses.com) involves boarding a plane to Bangkok, then a private Cessna to a tiny island in the Gulf of Thailand, then a speedboat to nearby Koh Kood, a lush paradise accessible only by water. Soneva Kiri is the island’s one luxury resort and the third Soneva-branded property from Six Senses, the Bangkok-based group known for its environmental ethos and laid-back style.

Naturally, the spa is spectacular—a 20,000-square-foot village with 11 treatment pavilions, a yoga and fitness room overlooking the treetops, and a lemongrass-scented gym. Spa guests are welcomed with a cup of chilled peppermint-honey tea and a consultation with a spa director, who explains the long menu of holistic and traditional treatments, including the signature Siam Journey ($470), an herbal bath, scrub, and facial (all using herbs grown in the property’s garden) followed by a Thai massage. After making a selection, guests step into an open-air shower, slip into a robe, and pad along a boardwalk to a private treatment pavilion set between tropical forest and the water’s edge.
